Why we joined kempo

bamboo

" The techniques being taught were varied but the one thing that really made me think 'Hey! I want to train here' was the atmosphere of the Dojo.

Everyone was open, friendly, and willing to answer any question I had. For me that was one of the most important reasons for training here."

“ I went upstairs and was met by Stewart. I was greeted with a warm smile and a friendly handshake. He also made eye contact with me when he spoke to me.

Immediately I knew that this Dojo was different from the ones that I had seen, and the ones that I had attended for nine months at home in Dublin. I was interested in joining for fitness, flexibility, self discipline, and for social reasons. All of the above criteria could be met in this Dojo and more, much more.

Stewart spoke with me for about 15 - 20 minutes and as each minute passed, I found myself wishing it was Monday already and I could train that night. However, I had to wait until after the weekend. I was excited about my new venture.

I was also very curious to learn about Kempo and its teachings. From my conversation with Stewart, I could tell that this was not just punching, kicking and throwing people.

There was a whole way of life that I was soon to learn more about.”

“All I remember of my first night is the thought “this is just what I am looking for”.

I had no expectations, (only stereotypes I did not believe in) and could only generate feelings of awe.

These people all seemed to be so involved in their martial art, without any negative vibes or cold indifference.

When I gave it a go, it was more complicated than I had expected.

My impression of the teacher and the students was high, developing quickly with each training.

It was unbelievable, when I was told there would be a grading after only a few lessons.”
